The Introduction to It all goes 'round by L P King:
From gingham to satin and back to gingham.../
we
find that Life goes 'round,/as the old dog circles 'round/and 'round and
'round and 'round… At some stage we will pause to reflect on
people we've met, places we've been and events which have influenced us
in some way. Often our circumstances make such reflection a necessary
part of the journey to understand our place in the order of things. I
have been truly fortunate to have met people and to have done things
that have made this journey an enlightening experience. This is the
stuff that makes great Poetry. Even the sociological trauma of being
thrust into a suburban environment has had its rewards. People and their
behaviour have always fascinated me and to have spent time in a place
where life is finite and at times bordering on the absurd has given me a
wealth of poetic inspiration. To be on the
outside looking in is, or should be, the Poet's lot. Part of the poetic
gift is to be privy to people's most intimate thoughts, desires and
dreams. Perhaps, in
some voyeuristic way, Poets are the eyes of the world since they
are able to give voice to that which most people keep hidden from the
rest of us. Emotions expressed add depth to our lives and Poets are
indeed privileged mediums for such expression. The plethora of words and
techniques which Poets have available to them in turn take the poetic
mindset to a higher plane. To be a Poet is a
buzz; in other words. For years I guess I ignored that fact. Poetry was
something which came naturally to me and I took for granted that I could
and would write Poetry. Now I know that the quest to be a better Poet is
also a quest to have a greater understanding of the world around me.
Part of my own personal journey has been to come to appreciate the
importance of Poetry as part of me personally and as part of my cultural
heritage. That's why you'll find bush poetry intermingled here with modern, free-form verse. Childhood memories loiter alongside the present while all sorts of people and situations hint at what the future has in store for us. It is a journey as dynamic as life itself. Muddled snippets of our existence creep into our memories and surprise us with their frankness. Whether it be a message to take care of our environment, or that we should seize love before we grow old, we must all honestly take stock before we can reach that higher plane. L P King
