The Pursuit of Innocence
Clifford Forde
In a totalitarian state reminiscent of the Soviet Union under Stalin, a young prisoner, Boots, escapes from a labour camp and finds refuge in a farm which has miraculously survived as an oasis of plenty and sanity in the desolation of the Beloved Leader's country after the Second Rebellion. Many stories are told through the characters' memories - the story of the prisoners, of the woman and her family and of the Captain who has visited her many times over the years. (From a review by Rayne Arnaud)
ABOUT CLIFFORD FORDE
I was brought up by my grandparents in County Cork in Southern Ireland from the age of 4, when my mother died. I had a pretty minimal education there and at 15 returned to London, where I worked in a variety jobs: factory worker, shop assistant, building site labourer ... all the while trying to smooth out my Cork accent and gain educational qualifications through evening classes and correspondence courses. I entered university as a mature student and studied Literature, Latin and Philosophy. From there I married and went into teaching - General Studies, Language and Literature, and Business English to students from the ages of 16 to 60. Meanwhile I had visions of being a poet and wrote lots of the stuff. And not being content with my credentials as a teacher I studied English by correspondence course to Honours level and afterwards took an M.Phil. I taught English Language and Literature for 25 five years in colleges of further education in the UK. During that time I also wrote poetry and was published in various UK magazines such as Outposts, New Prospects Poetry, The New Writer, Quartos, London Writers Competition booklet of 1993( prize-winner) and in PHRAS Open Poetry Competition booklet of 1995. About 6 years ago I began to concentrate on writing novels. So far I would say that The Pursuit of Innocence is my best. Clifford Forde

A seemingly dark novel, reminiscent of Camus, but with a glimmer of hope and indeed, humour and even romance, as the search for family and home amidst the pressures of an authoritarian society ensues.... This is an engrossing read and I personally find it refreshing to have found an Author who is discerning enough to draw on all his experience and literary studies to produce a work of such excellent quality. All too often it seems that modern Writers have sunken to new depths of blatant commercialism to satisfy an intellectually challenged society bereft of the ability to truly appreciate fine literature. The results generally speak for themselves in terms of mediocrity. Not so this work; and don't forget that sometimes there is more than that which meets the eye.... L P King |
